A stump left in the ground after a removal slowly turns into a nuisance. It holds moisture, draws termites, throws suckers up from the root plate, and as the roots die and shift it can heave nearby paving and concrete. Grinding it out in one visit clears the lot. Pricing comes off three things, the diameter of the stump at ground level, the species, and how far below the surface you want the wood gone. Most Ringwood jobs want around 200 to 300mm under, which is enough for fresh turf, paving sand or a shallow garden bed. If a slab, a footing or a new tree is going over the spot, I can chase the roots deeper, usually 400 to 500mm, sometimes more depending on the species.
When the grinding's done you're left with a mix of fine grindings, soil and root fibre in the hole, and that fill drops as the wood breaks down. So for anything you care about, turf, paving, or replanting, I'd backfill with screened topsoil rather than leave the grindings to slump. I can do that as a line item or you can barrow it yourself. Either way the stump is gone and the spot is ready to use.

How deep does the grinder go?
Standard is 200 to 300mm under the surface, which suits new turf, beds or paving sand. For a footing, a slab or replanting a tree in the same spot I can grind to 400 to 500mm, sometimes deeper if the species and roots allow. Tell me what's going in over the top and I'll match the depth.
Will the grinder fit through a narrow Ringwood side gate?
If the gate is 900mm clear or wider, yes, and that covers nearly every older and newer home around here. For anything narrower, or a stump stuck in an inner courtyard, I'll walk it on the quote visit and work out whether the small machine can be craned in or hand-chipped down.
What's left in the hole when you're done?
A blend of grindings, root fibre and disturbed soil, roughly level with the ground around it. That fill slumps as the wood rots, so for lawn or paving I'd suggest raking the grindings out and backfilling with screened topsoil. For a garden bed you can leave it, mix in compost, and give it a season before planting anything precious.
Can you grind several stumps in one visit?
Yes, and it works out cheaper per stump because the machine only gets mobilised once. Worth doing the lot if you've inherited a few old ones, or a row was left along the back fence. Send through how many and rough diameters and I'll quote them together.
